About Me

Mr. Ed: I'm 70 years old and have lived in the Akron-Tallmadge, Ohio area all of my life. For 10-years (1957-1967) I lived most summers at our home in Cook Forest, Pa. I'm a U.S. Army veteran (1971-1973). I collect many things such as: antique cars, antique firearms, movies, movie props, old newspapers and posters, Wyatt Earp items, Civil War items, John Wayne items, items from the old west including Native American items, just about anything historical. I've been married for 47-years. My wife and I have a son and a daughter and three granddaughters and two great grandchildren.

The Veteran's Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio ~

On February 11, 2020, my wife went with a good friend to see about services for her husband who had passed away a few months ago. He had been a veteran. So they went to the VA cemetery in Rittman. My wife took these pictures there on their visit.

I will probably end up here as I am a veteran as well.

My Old West town workshop ~

I built these buildings in our yard back in 1988. I used these two as a woodworking shop. Here, my John Wayne stand-up keeps watch for bad guys and Indians.

I spent hours and hours out there working on projects.

The buildings consisted of a General Store and a Feed & Grain shop.

Both structures cost me a grand total of $18.00 to build. I used lumber that I salvaged from my job and I already had the windows and roofing. All I had to buy was the nails and screws. I heated the buildings with a woodburning stove.

I'm sorry to say that in September of 1999, some wooden posts that I had standing in the corner slid over and fell on top of the woodstove while I was in the house. They pushed the stove over and the buildings burned to the ground. I lost every tool that I owned that day. But I have gotten them all back since and now my workshop is in the basement. And there is no woodburning stove involved.

Bob was a really nice guy. He and his wife and me and mine had dinner several times together. We became pretty good friends and even exchanged phone numbers and e-mails. Sadly, Bob passed away a few years ago.

My Duke .44 magnum

This is my John Wayne Winchester lever action rifle. Duke introduced this gun in 1939 in the movie, "Stagecoach" and used it in many films throughout the years all the way to his last in 1976, "The Shootist".I believe his was in the caliber .44-40. Mine is a .44 Magnum. Even though I bought this gun back in 1990 actually for show only, I have shot it many times and it's one of the most actuate rifles I have ever owned. Surprising!

We have a cat, Duke, who likes to wash his paws

If I go in to wash my hands, Duke sits at the sink and waits his turn.

He won't jump onto the sink until I'm finished.

Once I am done and move for the towel, Duke jumps up to the sink and I have to turn the water back on for him.

So I turn the water on.

He slooshes his front paws around in the water and cleans them completely.

Then he turns to me as if to say, "Hey! I'm done. You can turn the water off now.

Civil War eatting utensils .

Back in the Civil War, many soldiers were forced to make their own utensils for eatting. This is a spoon made simply of hammered copper and a wooden stick. Also is a knife made from the jaw bone of an animal with the teeth still there. At the top and hard to see in the picture is a folding knife from the war. These are from my personal collection.

My Time Travels ~

November 22, 1963. On my way back to the old west, I stopped off in Dallas, Texas on Nov. 22, 1963 to talk to my old buddy, JFK. I told him he should avoid the plaza area on his drive through town. But would he listen? Nooo! But for that matter, I told Lincoln not to go to the theater that night and you can see what happened there.

I also stopped by the Grant house in 1878 to see my old friend, U.S. He loved to be called that. While I was there I got to meet his youngest daughter, Minnie. She was a fox. We talked for hours and then they wanted a group picture taken on the porch. While the camera was being set up my cell phone rang. Minnie looked at me and said, "Your underwear is ringing." I was red faced to say the least.

Then I traveled on back to 1862 and stopped by the Civil War battleship Ironclad Monitor. The crew was taking a break and I talked to several of them. At one point I showed them my Visa card but they didn't believe it was actually money from the future. Then Rufus Boggs got a Dear John letter from his sweetheart, Molly Peck back in Lancaster, Pa. He was pretty torn up over it. But them he noticed that I wore my pocket watch on my wrist and thought that was a cool idea. Then we were to have lunch together but I told them I had to run. That hard tack and beans that they served was not my favorite. While I talked to the guys, They asked about my t-shirt which had a slogan reading, "Trump for president". They said that Lincoln would be re-elected so this Trump guy didn't have a chance.

The time machine is in the shop ~

I had to put the time machine in the shop to have a few things tweeked. The brake rotors were going bad and it was hard to get it stopped. I went back to 1900 and hit the brakes and didn't stop until I got to 1897. That was weird!

4th Of July, 2011

Every July 4th we have a cookout for friends and family. This year our good friend, Sammy brought his 1931 Ford 2-door sedan. We parked Sammy's Ford and my 1930 Chevy Town Sedan out front around the flagpole.

Sammy is pushing 90 years old. He bought this Ford in 1959 and has stored it ever since. He did the restorable in 2009 and 2010. This event was the first place he brought it since the restorable was completed.

Sammy added turn signals and a second tailight. Otherwise, the car is original.

Tallmadge Circle, Tallmadge, Ohio. 9-11-2014. Every Sept. 11, Tallmadge lights over 2000 candles in memory of those who died at the World Trade Center in 2001.

My wife got Autumn at the shelter. She was very young but had been in several foster homes. She must have been abused in at least one of them because when we got her, if you spoke too loud, she would fall on her back with her legs in the air and try to shield herself. How in the hell can a person abuse a dog?

She likes to sit and watch old Perry Mason episodes.

She really loves to snuggle.

She loves going to get her nails clipped because she knows that she'll get a new toy afterwards.

But she hates it when the cat locks her out and won't let her in.

More nail clipping. She never seems to mind it. She just stands there and lets them do it. The girl even said that she wouldn't tie her but it's the rule.

UPDATE:

Our cat, Waysha, died on January 20, 2016. She had just passed her 14th birthday. She suffered from kidney failure and was put to sleep. But she is buried here at home. Autumn was lost for about a week. She kept searching the basement and upstairs looking for her buddy. I can honestly say that Waysha was the best cat we ever had. We miss her.

Vietnam Wall ~

Today is my birthday. "Happy Birthday to me! Happy Birthday to me!" Okay, enough with that crap. The traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall came to Akron thanks to the Catavolos Funeral Home. The Funeral Home is on the same property as Rose Hill Burial Park Cemetery on West Market Street. Alone with the wall were many displays of photos from Vietnam and artifacts from the war. The wall was only here for four days. We visited on Saturday, August 20. It was a very impressive display. This wall is 3/4 size of the original in Washington, DC.

Here's some of the pictures I took when we were there ~

The Catavolos Funeral Home has a very large property so there had the perfect place to display the wall.

Even at this smaller size, the wall is very long.

As we approached the walkway, a nice lady and her husband was walking toward us. I was wearing my veteran's hat and she shook my hand and thanks me for my service. I thanked her but what I really wanted to say was, "Madam, I really didn't do anything. If you want to thank someone, walk over to that wall and thank all the names on it. They are the true heroes in all of this."

They had several hand granades on display but none like mine. This is one of the granades that I brought back with me. When I didn't have anything to do, I would decorate them. Notice the peace sign in the ring.

I was walking around Restland Cemetery one past weekend, gathering information for my work on Find A Grave.com when I noticed far in the back of the cemetery, by the garages, an old fire truck parked. I walked back to check it out and took these photos. It's from the old Brimfield Fire Department and looks to be, not only mostly original, but also un-restored. It's in great shape and is a really cool old truck. It's a Dodge Power Wagon from the late 1940s. Check out the pictures and see what you think.

Jay and I are old friends. Ofcourse, we've never met face to face...or spoken to each other...or even written to each other. But we were in the same state once at the same time. And that makes us friends.
